The actual track record of these implementations is mixed, and a more nuanced analysis of where generative AI genuinely adds value in learning contexts is now possible.
Where Generative AI Genuinely Helps
On-demand explanation and rephrase: The most consistently valuable application of generative AI in learning is the ability to produce alternative explanations of a concept at a learner's request. Human-authored course content is written at a fixed level of abstraction and from a single pedagogical angle. When a learner encounters an explanation that doesn't land, they have historically had limited options: re-read the same text, search for alternative resources, or remain confused. A generative AI system that can produce a fresh explanation — at a different level of abstraction, using a different analogy, connecting to a different prior knowledge anchor — addresses this problem directly and at zero marginal cost.
